Surfing Towards Development

This unit is intended for use at Level 6 (VELS). Students will develop knowledge about the operation of one major natural system that is part of the biosphere and atmosphere (in this case, coasts). In addition, students at Level 6 are expected to evaluate the impact/effectiveness of a development-related project on physical and human landscapes, locally, nationally and globally. The work of AusAID and, in particular, SurfAid International is highlighted in this unit.

In Level 6 students are required to collect geographical information from a range of sources and to collate, analyse, evaluate and present it using a range of forms. Students should be able to apply geographic conventions when presenting data. Within the context of examining the activities of SurfAid International in the Mentawai Islands, students will be offered many opportunities to use these skills.

Elements of this unit could also be used for VCE Unit 4 – other global phenomena. In this case, teachers would focus on malaria as another global phenomenon (there are several global policies in place) and then look at Malaria Free Mentawai as an example of an effective local strategy.
