Waves of Hope
This resource looks at why people move between places and how this has consequences for the people and place. An important secondary focus is on how individuals, groups and institutions work to promote social justice.
Students examine one facet of global tourism and explore how this has affected communities in an Asia Pacific setting. By examining the effects of Surf Tourism in the Mentawai Islands students are able to see how the process of tourism has contributed to a rapid and far-reaching transformation, changing the islands and the lifestyles of the local people.
This transformation has been brought about largely through the work of SurfAid International. The success of SurfAid’s work to bring about positive, sustainable health change while respecting the unique culture and customs of the islands provides a case study where students can look at what forms the basis of the positive interaction between two diverse cultural groups, that of the global surfing community and the Mentawai island people.
Students will explore how groups within the global surfing community, both here in New Zealand and from other countries, meet their responsibilities in a global context and establish how these actions link to their shared vision and global perspective to citizenship.
